I unfortunately threw my back out a few days ago so no new progress on the MG, but I did replace the thermostat in my Volvo over Easter so I figured I’d throw this video up now. I was getting a check engine light and when I pulled the codes it gave me P0128 code. After doing some searching on the interwebs that translates to “Coolant Temp Below Thermostat Regulating Temp”. From the looks of it most people replaced their coolant temp sensor first which did not fix the problem, then they went for the thermostat which did fix the problem. I figured I’d cut to the chase and just go right for the thermostat and sure enough that fixed the problem and only cost me $10.

I’m helping my mother in law replace head gasket on her 1998 volvo v70 awd non turbo and i found your s40 looks to be almost the same engine. I have never done a head gasket beforebut i’m confident i can do it. your timing belt video really helped i was wondering if you could give me some tips on what to do when i’m ready to remove the valve cover and then the heads i’m pretty nervous about this especially for my first engine rebuild to be on this type of car. hELP ME MARTY!!!!!!!
Holy poop I just saw you live on the other side of Lanc. i’m in Hershey. Gotta love these pennsyltuckiens
I see I have two responses but I am not sure how to access them my email is dustindouglas1976@yahoo.com if u don’t mind. Thanks
Hey Dustin, I’ll throw a video together for you this weekend. I think the most critical thing you’ll need to worry about is keeping the camshafts in time when you pull the head off.
Thanks for your response I went to town tearing everything down, marked the cranks and pulled the camshaft the camshafts shouldn’t move correct. or do I need to be extra careful with them?
Also the head gasket kit we got has about forty different gaskets am I going to need to use all of them or are some of them possibly for other parts around the engine which i’m not removing? Should I replace any bolts? Sorry so many questions I just don’t have anyone else to ask thank you
Wow just saw you had a 98 jeep grand cherokee web album. I actually have one as well, my baby. I rear ended someone last october and tried to miss them at the last second so instead of hitting them straight on and letting the entire front end take on the impact i ended up hitting them with drivers side front end which took on the whole impact smashing it in pretty far. I am dying to fix her but there’s so much internal body damage (similar to a halfway crushed soda can) I don’t no where to start. I think I need to cut the bad out and go to the junkyard and cut out a good front end. But not being very experienced in mechanics especially body work i’m just kinda stuck. The smash is exactly like your picture except it’s deeper and worse. Any advise on how I start this? Again thank you so so much. By the way I love the glasses in your intro. Ha
Hello sir I no your busy Just wondering if u could possibly explain how to get the timing belt off and the new one on. It seems to be stuck on one of the bottom pully’s
Hey Marty,
Thank you so much. I tried to change my daughter’s S40 thermostat last month but couldn’t get to it.
Today I found your video on Youtube and saw how easy it was.
Of course you need the proper tools.
In my case, a T-30 torx bit for the cover bolts and
a T-40 Torx bit for the Thermostat housing bolts.

No problem, I’m glad I could help!
please help me out with this confusion. i m planning to buy Volvo S40 and saw that its specs were really very nice and it is also a fast car. but at the same time i saw this car’s name on the consumers list to avoid cars. is it worthy enough to buy this car or it comes with lots of problems. plz help me out with good info.
thanks.
It’s been a really good car for us, parts can be slightly pricier at times, but other then that it gets good gas milage and still has a little bit of zip to it. I don’t regret buying one
